Roulette Guide – an Introduction

Online RouletteRoulette has been the most popular non-card based table game in online and land-based casinos because it’s easy to learn and hard to master.

The premise of roulette is pretty simple. There is a wheel with numbers on it, and a ball is placed on the wheel when it’s spun to determine which number is the winner. You place bets on different numbers before the spin, and getting your number picked means that you win. With that having been said, there’s a ton of depth in this game, and that’s one of the reasons why it has consistently been the most popular casino table game that does not use cards for decades.

Where to Play Online Roulette for Real Money

When you’re looking for a casino for playing online roulette for real money, there are really just a few major considersations you should focus on. Because so many casinos have these games, you have a bit of flexibility in determining what the best online roulette sites are for you specifically. Game selection, promotions and a mobile interface are three of the main things you should look for outside of the normal type of things like knowing the site is trustworthy and has a good history with paying out withdrawals when they are supposed to.

Those who want to play mobile roulette should start by focusing on the sites that have a mobile option, and you should make sure any site you’re considering is compatible with your current smartphone or tablet. The last thing you want to have happen is that you spend the time signing up and making a deposit only to discover that the online roulette casino you’ve chosen doesn’t actually support your device. Many people have made this mistake in the past, and you’ll save yourself a lot of stress and wasted effort if you double check before getting signed up yourself.

Basic Gameplay for Online Roulette

There are multiple styles of roulette, but they all come down to the same basic idea. You have options to be on individual numbers or groups of numbers on a wheel. The wheel is spun with a ball on it, and the space that the ball lands on determines which bets win and which bets lose. You place your bet, the wheel is spun and the bets are clarified. That’s all there is to gameplay for this particular title.

That might seem pretty simple, but there’s a fair amount of nuance between the different types of roulette out there and the wide range of available bets and wagers. Because there’s a lot of flexibility, in the game, there’s also a lot of room to create your own strategies without having to worry so much about one being incredibly better than the other. In fact, consider the following:

Other than one specific type of bet in one specific type of roulette, every single wager that you can place in any given style of roulette will have the exact same house advantage. This means that, other than the exception that we’ll cover below, there is literally no way that you can make a strategic error by choosing one bet over another.

The exception to this very fascinating rule happens in American roulette with something called the basket bet. This is a single bet on the 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3, and it has a worse payout rate than any other wager in the game. This doesn’t apply to any other form of roulette, and it won’t apply to most players since we’ll advise against playing American roulette in the first place, as you’ll see below.

The Six Major Styles of Roulette

All forms of roulette that you would have been able to find over the past century in any land-based or online casino will fall into one of six different categories. With that having been said, you’ll only be able to find a few of them online today, and not all of them will be available in every casino. The names and distinguishing features of each style of online roulette are as follows:

Along these lines, the house advantage for European roulette is 2.7 percent, and it’s 5.3 percent for American roulette. These are the two most common games that you’ll find online. The even money wagers have a house edge of 1.35 percent in French roulette, though the rest of the bets have the same 2.7 percent advantage for the house as in the European style of the game. Mini roulette has a whooping 7.7 percent house advantage, the same as the triple-zero or Old Style American Roulette game.

As you can see, the best choice for most players is French roulette (if it’s an option), and the worst choice is mini roulette.

Basic Types of Wagers

There are essentially two types of wagers in roulette, no matter what style you’re playing. Beginners should start with what are called the “outside bets,” which involve the labeled spots outside of the grid of numbers. This gives you things like even, odd, red and black, which pay out if the winning number is even (except for zero), odd, red or black, respectively. These are easy to understand and typically have a low variance with good chances of winning on any given spin.

The other type of wager is called an “inside bet,” and that’s when you place a wager on the actual grid of numbers. The most basic inside bet is called a straight-up wager, and that’s when you place a bet on an individual number. That bet wins if the specific number is hit, and it loses if any other numbers come up. While there are a wide range of other types of inside bets available in the game, players new to roulette should start with the outside bets first before moving on to advanced roulette betting strategies.

Payout Rates and Variance

A very fun and interesting feature of roulette is that the payouts automatically adjust themselves to keep the same house advantage between different wagers. For example, if you’re playing European roulette and place a bet on red, you’ll have a payout rate of 1:1. This means if you wager $10 and win, you’ll profit $10 on the play.

However, if you were to bet $10 on just the number 14, then you’ll have a payout rate of 35:1, so a win would profit a whooping $350. Even though the payouts and chances of winning are completely different here, the average house advantage will remain 2.7 percent and the average total payout rate to the player stays 97.3 percent. This is because the payouts automatically scale to the chances of winning.

The end result is that your betting options are really choices between different levels of variance. An even money wager like red, black, even or odd will give you a low-variance experience with a low payout. However, if you choose straight-up wager by betting on a specific number, your payout for when you win increases, but your variance does as well.
