Gladiator Slot Machine
The Gladiator slot by Playtech is based on the mega-hit action movie by the same name that starred Russel Crowe.
Playtech’s Gladiator Slot Review
Gladiator was a major movie hit that did hundreds of millions of dollars in revenues and that won tons of rewards. Playtech gained the licensing rights to this game and turned it into a progressive jackpot slot that has received a tremendous amount of attention over the years. It’s one of their most popular games of all time, and it has a lot to offer players.
|Bet Sizes||$0.01 – 250|
|Features||Progressive Jackpot, Coliseum Bonus, Gladiator Jackpot Bonus|
Format and Layout of the Gladiator Slot
The betting setup in this game gives you a lot of flexibility to pick out total wager sizes that fit your bankroll and what you’re comfortable with. There are five reels, three rows and 25 paylines, and you can bet between one and ten coins per payline. You can pick coins that range from $0.01 to $1, and that leads to an overall betting range that starts at $0.25 at the minimum end and that runs up to the $250 level at the upper end.
Because this game has a high volatility, you’ll probably want to pick bet sizes that are smaller than what you’re typically used to with games that have low and medium levels of volatility instead. Also realize that you can win the progressives with bets at any size, so you don’t have to worry about hurting your RTP by choosing any particular size of wager. Your chances of winning a progressive scale proportionately with your bet size, so it always gives you a fair chance to win.
Something that’s really noteworthy about this game is that Russell Crowe does not actually appear in it. In fact, he’s the only major character to not appear in it, which is really strange considering the fact that he had the lead role. He played the main character of Maximus Decimus Meridius who goes from being a general to a slave to a gladiator and ends up taking over from the man who betrayed him and had his family killed. You’ll see footage from the film and characters as well, but you won’t see him for whatever reason.
There has been a lot of speculation about why that is. The leading theory is that he did not want his likeness on anything related to gambling.
Wild Symbols and the Gladiator Jackpot Bonus
The wild symbol in this game is the helmet that Maximus chooses when first fighting in front of the Emperor. It shows up on the middle three reels only, and it will substitute for anything but the scatter symbol, as is the case with most wild symbols. What’s so interesting about this wild is that it ties into another feature that actually gives you chances for the largest payouts in the game and some of the largest wins that you can get on any Playtech-powered slot.
This happens thanks to the Gladiator Jackpot Bonus round. When you get all three wilds on the reels at the same time, they will pay out normally and then expand to create a 9×9 grid. The helmets will randomly be either gold, silver or bronze. You’ll win a payout for each helmet with the gold getting the highest and the bronze getting the lowest. However, if you get nine golden helmets all at once, then you win the progressive jackpot.
We should point out that while you can get this bonus round during the regular play or the free spins mode described below, you cannot win the progressive jackpot with a free spin. Also, your chances of getting the progressive increases with your bet size, as we discussed above.
Coliseum Bonus Round and Scatters
You’ll see the Coliseum symbol on all five reels in the Gladiator video slot, and that’s because it’s a scatter. You can win a payout with two of a kind or more of this symbol located anywhere on the game board. This includes a 1x win for two of a kind and 4x for three of a kind. The prize for four is 20x, and you’ll win a large payout of 100x for five. These wins are multiplied by your total bet size, so the top payout for a five-of-a-kind combination is the same as a 2,500x line bet win, which is half of the largest regular jackpot in the game and is the second-largest non-progressive payout you can get.
Three of more of this symbol takes you to the Coliseum Bonus where you can pick different characters to win instant payouts.
Character Symbol Payouts
With Maximus nowhere to be found on the reels, the top-paying symbol is the Emperor, and he will give you 5,000x for five of a kind. His sister, and an old lover of Maximus, pays 1,000x for five on a payline as well. Other than the scatter symbol, these are the only two symbols to give payouts for just two of a kind. Everything else in the Gladiator online slot requires at least three of a kind for a win.
Next up is the Senator, and he pays a solid 350x payout for five. Five of the other gladiator or the man who purchases Maximus and becomes his mentor will each get you a 250x payout. It’s worth noting that the man who played the mentor role actually died during filming, so they had to change the script slightly to imply that he died off-screen when he was actually supposed to live in the original script for the film.
Golden Card Rank Symbols
Six card rank symbols are found in this slot, and they have a style that fits in really well with the Roman theme that covers the rest of the game. These letters and numbers are written in a bold and gold font, and they’re some of the better-looking card rank symbols of any game from around the time of this slot’s release.
The A and K each have the same 200x payout for five of a kind on a payline. If you get five of the Q or J on a payline, your win is 120x. At the bottom of the pay table are the wins for the 10 and 9 symbols, and five of either awards you 75x.
- The scenes and characters from the movie make this game look incredible.
- The progressive jackpot is one of the largest that Playtech has available.
- The Coliseum Bonus fits into the theme of the movie perfectly and stands out from other games as being a unique style of bonus feature.
- The volatility is very high, which will turn off a sizable portion of players.
- Russell Crowe does not appear in the lead role, which seems a bit dubious in a game of this popularity.
The Gladiator video slot is a pretty big deal even in today’s industry, and it’s probably the most popular progressive slot Playtech ever released (even though it’s not the largest jackpot they have available). It’s a great game based on an excellent movie, and they did a really good job with making sure it lived up to the hype of the film. With multiple bonus features and a value-packed pay table, it’s not difficult to understand where the popularity for this game came from.
